Rep. Charles Rangel has capitulated to those, like Rep. Mark Schauer of Michigan, who’ve been calling on him to resign his chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee in the wake of the House Ethics Committee finding him guilty of willful violations of House ethics rules.
Rangel relinquished his chairmanship, but only temporarily, calling it “a leave of absence until such time as the ethics committee completes its work.” It is not clear who will take over Rangel’s position on the committee. Rep. Pete Stark is the ranking Democrat on the committee, but early reports last night indicated that it could be Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan.
Just before this move was announced, Rep. Gary Peters of Michigan had joined Schauer in calling on Rangel to resign, saying, “It’s time for Chairman Rangel to step down. Charlie Rangel’s past service to our country, including as a decorated soldier in the Korean War, is commendable. However, the House Ethics Committee has found that Mr. Rangel has broken the stringent ethics rules Democrats enacted upon returning to the majority in 2007. It’s time for him to resign his chairmanship so that he does not become a distraction from efforts to solve the major challenges facing the country.”
Peters also said that, like Schauer, he would be giving back money donated to his campaign by Rangel’s leadership committee. In a press release, his office said he would donate the $16,000 to local Oakland County charities.
