The U.S. Coast Guard has at least temporarily blocked an application by the Detroit International Bridge Company, owned by Matty Moroun, to build a second span of the Ambassador Bridge. The Detroit Free Press reports:
The U.S. Coast Guard has dealt Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel (Matty) Moroun a major setback in his hopes to build a second bridge, telling him it will not consider his application for a permit as long as he remains in conflict with the City of Detroit over rights to land near the bridge site.
Without a Coast Guard permit, Moroun cannot go forward with his hoped-for second span parallel to the Ambassador Bridge…
“The Coast Guard has received no credible indication that the property rights issue is any closer to being resolved now than it was over three years ago,” Elgaaly wrote. Recent court cases challenging Moroun’s actions “underscore the Coast Guard’s conclusion that DIBC is not likely to obtain the necessary property rights in the near future.”
Moroun has been involved in several high profile court cases in disputes over property necessary to build the bridge and with the government over the possible building of a public bridge to Canada rather than the second span that he wants to build, which would remain privately owned.
