Unemployment extension could take days to achieve

By Ed Brayton | 03.02.10 | 12:06 pm

Because of Sen. Jim Bunning’s procedural trickery to prevent a vote on a bill to extend federal unemployment benefits, the passage of that bill — which also includes a necessary fix to Medicare, authorization for federal transportation projects and much more — will likely take until the end of this week. The Detroit Free Press reports:

Now, the Senate is likely to pass a larger package, but not until later this week.

“The net result of one senator’s objection is to put us into a procedural process that could take days,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the Senate majority whip. “It’s going to create hardship across America.”

That larger bill may well include a provision extending enhanced federal matching funds for Medicaid as well, and possibly even a boost in federal aid to states for education, both of which would be a big help to Michigan’s budget process.

The larger bill still makes no mention of providing additional weeks to those long term unemployed.

Bunning is a prime example of why the democratic party continues to exist and thrive. Republicans only care about rich sponsors and lobbyists. I USED to be a Republican and never thought I would be on the same side of pelosi and company but bunning is sure coming up as a very, very small man.

As a nation we are sooooo screwed. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
We need to elect monkies for congress, they can easily be taught to vote along party lines, are more entertaining to watch and will work for peanuts.

Bunning was not against passing the bill he just didn't want to tack the price tag on to your kids to pay. We need to cut spending to pay for things in these tough times not just keep running up the deficit.

The voters better think twice before that put the Republicans back in charge again!
