Schwarz likely to run for governor as independent

By Todd A. Heywood | 03.01.10 | 3:02 pm

Former Congressman Joe Schwarz says he is leaning towards an independent run for the governor’s office this year. He is expected to make an announcement this week, and the Battle Creek Enquirer reports that announcement could come as soon as Wednesday.

“I’m leaning toward doing it,” Schwarz, 72, told the Enquirer.

Schwarz was a Republican, but Susan Demas says that he “left the GOP because it left him, prioritizing the holy war against abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research over good, old-fashioned fiscal conservatism and a strong national defense.”

He was considered a moderate, spent 16 years in the state Senate, and one term in the U.S. Congress representing the 7th Congressional District.

Schwarz getting into the horse race could shake up a lot of things if he can gain any traction with the voters.
