Former Genesee County Treasurer Dan Kildee has announced he will file paperwork to run for governor Tuesday. The Flint Journal is reporting Kildee, 51, will file the paperwork in Lansing and lead to a formal announcement.
Kildee said his campaign will focus on tax reform and job creation.
“The field is opening up to the point that I feel like I am the only Democrat who can win who is true to the principles of this party,” Kildee said.
Kildee will join Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero and State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith as a formal candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor. Andy Dillon, a Redford Township Democrat and Speaker of the Michigan House, is expected to finalize his bid for the nomination by the end of the month.
He also spoke with the Detroit Free Press, saying:
“It’s going to be an interesting year,” Kildee said. “It’s very hard to predict what the dynamic will be in November. But it always comes down at the end to two names on the ballot.”
