Michigan GOP says Bernero will be backed by the White House

By Todd A. Heywood | 02.22.10 | 10:19 am

The Michigan Republican Party has issued a press release in which they claim President Barack Obama will support Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero for the Democratic nomination for governor, according to MLive.com’s Susan Demas:

“All three supported the stimulus package, but the odds on favorite for a White House endorsement has to be Bernero,” said MRP spokeswoman Jennifer Hoff. “He’s gone out of his way to support the stimulus package, despite 162,000 job losses in Michigan since it was enacted.”

As Demas goes on to note, Bernero has not been a big Obama fan. He endorsed then-Sen. Hillary Clinton for the nomination, and he has railed against Obama and his failure to address to trade issues with China.

What Demas doesn’t mention is that Bernero has confirmed that he was wooed by the DNC and the White House.

Time will tell if the White House political team deems Bernero fit to follow Gov. Jennifer Granholm, or if he puts his bets down on some one else — likely Andy Dillon, who has hired AKPD, Inc. a political firm founded by Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod.
