According to newly released numbers posted on the Michigan State Police’s website, the state’s Sex Offender Registry currently lists 45,546 men, women and children on it. That marks an increase of 1,582 individual registered sex offenders — or an increase of more than 3.6 percent — since 2009′s first-quarter mandatory verification period.
The new data, also posted on the state police’s website, represent the total number of registered sex offenders as of the end of January.
The 2010 first-quarter total is also an .8 percent increase over the previous quarter.
Here’s a further breakdown of latest 2010 first-quarter statistics:
- 45,546 registered sex offenders in the Sex Offender Registry database
- 13,528 offenders currently incarcerated
- 27,085 offenders who must verify their address either yearly or quarterly
- 43,030 offenders who appear on the public online registry
- 40,896 offenders who are currently in compliance
- 4,650 offenders who failed to comply
As of last year, Michigan held the distinction of having the third highest ratio of sex offenders to state residents of any state in the country. According to the state’s Sex Offender Registry Act, all violations of the state’s Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) laws -– not just rape or child molestation -– require the perpetrator to be on the sex offender list, including over 3,500 juveniles.
