Michael Scott Gokey, a former aide to former Michigan Gov. John Engler, will spend the next 18 months on probation and pay the county $15,000 in connection to a guilty plea for fraud.
Gokey was originally charged with four felony fraud counts for his part in a failed condo-development program in Marquette. In exchange for his guilty plea to one count of contractor fraudulent use of a building contract fund, the three other felony charges were dropped, reports the Marquette Mining Journal.
When former GOP Gov. John Engler was in office, Gokey served as deputy Northern Michigan representative. In addition, he serves on the Executive Committee of the Marquette County Republican Party, according to its website.
Gokey and his three business partners, Ryan Bruns, 36, of Marquette, Brian Swift, 48, originally from Escanaba, and Chad LaVallie, 36, originally from Kingsford, who have both been living in the Chicago area, originally faced the same charges. But prosecutors dropped the cases against Bruns, Swift and LaVallie in November when the agreed to the pay the victim back the $75,000 she invested with the company, Tri-Star Development for them to build her a condo in the Hawk Ridge condo complex.
Still facing charges is Joel Westrom, 40, formerly of Marquette. Westrom was the property manager for the complex and faces four felony charges as well. He goes on trial June 21.
