Levin talks torture

By Ed Brayton | 02.17.10 | 7:36 am

Sen. Carl Levin gave an interview to the Grand Rapids Press editorial board on Monday and offered opinions on a wide range of subjects. One that stuck out to me was his response to former Vice President Dick Cheney’s zealous advocacy of torture and abuse of detainees. Levin’s answer to that was spot on:

“I think he (Cheney) did severe damage to our country. I think this whole policy of you can torture people because it works runs smack up against information we have from the people who do this sort of work. You get bum information.

“We can get information using proper techniques. It (torture) jeopardizes our security. It’s a great recruiting tool for al-Qaida and the Taliban.

“Putting aside all the moral issues, all the legal issues, it works the opposite way. The Christmas guy talked to the FBI. His family came and urged him to keep talking. They persuaded him to give us information because they were satisfied that he would be treated fairly.

“Boy, if they had come over and seen their son tortured, imagine what that would have produced. Another 1,000 suicide bombers. I think (Cheney’s) way off on this.”

Hear, hear.
