Bernero chastised, Bowman forms exploratory committee

By Todd A. Heywood | 02.11.10 | 4:23 pm

The Lansing State Journal, Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero’s hometown paper, published a blistering editorial Thursday about the mayor’s candidacy for governor.

Bernero and his team have relied heavily on attrition and job vacancies to shore up previous budgets. They also have won concessions – limited concessions – from some city unions. Still, the work ahead is daunting.

Ambrose and other City Hall employees can crunch the numbers, draft options and game-out scenarios, but the only people who can actually decide are the political leaders installed in the City Council and the mayor’s office.

If recent history is any guide, the budget process will produce plenty of rhetorical fireworks and some policy differences. Lansing needs a mayor to lead the debate.

It’s a full-time job. Bernero should stick to it.

No word yet from the Bernero camp about the editorial.

In the meantime, former State Treasurer Bob Bowman filed paperwork Thursday to create an exploratory committee for a possible bid for the Democratic nomination, reports MLive.com. Bowman actually lives in New York, but has a summer home in Michigan. He has been attractive to some Democrats because he is considered to be able to self-fund the race. That’s key for Democrats, considering their former shoe-in Lt. Gov. John Cherry dropped out of the race Jan. 5 citing fundraising problems.
