UPDATED: Eagle Forum running ads against Hoekstra?

By Ed Brayton | 02.08.10 | 7:15 am

According to one Michigan resident, Phyllis Schlafly’s ultra-conservative Eagle Forum has been taking out radio ads attacking Rep. Pete Hoekstra, a Republican running for governor, and broadcasting them on talk radio in the Detroit area. The resident posted about this on gather.com and describes the commercials:

Eagle Forum, an extremely conservative activist PAC, and one of the foremost sponsors of the TEA Party convention this week, has been running radio attack ads against Representative Hoekstra before his campaign really even gets started. They’ve run no ads that I’ve heard supporting anyone, but they obviously want to scuttle Rep. Hoekstra.

In the ads, a pair of truly terrible actors, express astonishment and outrage against Rep. Hoekstra’s votes on the stimulus package, gun control in Washington, D.C., and a couple of other knee-jerk TEA Party hot buttons. They’re gonna by-golly write to him and make him explain his votes… so there!

I contacted the person who heard the commercials and he said he heard them on WWJ AM. I have not yet been able to verify their existence. If true, this is a very interesting development because Hoekstra has been an ally of the Eagle Forum in the past. Less than a year ago, Hoekstra and Schlafly appeared on a radio show together to promote his legislation to pass a “parental rights” amendment to the constitution, something the religious right has long supported.

If anyone else out there has heard these commercials, please leave a comment. I’m waiting to hear back from the Eagle Forum, seeking confirmation of the content of the commercials.

Update: The Eagle Forum replied to my inquiry and said:

Eagle Forum did not authorize or pay for any radio ads in Michigan. If somebody else is running radio ads using the name Eagle Forum, we would like to know about it.
