Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is expected to hold a press conference on Monday in Detroit where he will announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor.
Michigan Messenger confirmed in early January that the tough talking mayor was going to run, but Bernero and his staff have been playing coy with the media.
Jamaine Dickens, the spokesman for the Bernero exploratory committee, confirms the mayor is holding the press conference in Detroit.
This news comes after Bernero’s team accidentally sent an e-mail last week to James Madison College students at Michigan State University seeking interns for his gubernatorial race.
Bernero will join state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith as an official candidate for the Democratic nomination, but it is possible the field could quickly become crowded. Bob Bowman, former state treasurer under James Blanchard; Denise Ilitch, University of Michigan regent; and state Rep. Andy Dillon, the Speaker of the Michigan House, are all expected to weigh in on possible runs before the end of February.
The mayor could face a difficult primary, according to a poll commissioned by Detroit television station WXYZ. The poll found that Bernero ranked sixth amongst six likely candidates in the Dem field. But the good news for Bernero and his team is that 51% of those polled said they had not decided who to support. Denise Ilitch topped that poll with 23 percent, followed by Congressman Gary Peters with nine percent, and Dillon at eight percent. Peters has already said he won’t run for governor.
