BP Alternative Energy has notified the Huron – Manistee National Forest that it is planning to withdraw its application to build up to 28 turbines, each one 420 feet tall, on federal land north of Ludington.
Forest spokesman Ken Arbogast said today that the permitting process for the proposed wind park has been suspended pending further communication from the company.
In October 2008 BP applied for a special use permit that would allow it to build the wind park on a 75 acre parcel near the Lake Michigan coast. The project would have required the development of five miles of permanent new roads in the forest, the installation of over 40 miles of underground electrical lines, and several miles of above ground transmission lines.
According to the Forest Service some of the proposed turbine locations were in areas that are designated for old growth.
Two other large wind projects are being planned for Mason County. Consumers Energy is planning a 100-megawatt land-based wind farm, and Scandia Wind has proposed a 100 square mile wind farm with up to 200 wind turbines off the shore of Ludington.
