janice-winfreyjpg-a938851ec9799d10_mediumDetroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey, a Democrat, announced today that she is joining the race for Secretary of State.

“Michigan doesn’t need a politician without election administrative experience, we need someone who does the job, know the job and has made significant accomplishments while performing the job,” Winfrey said on her campaign website. “Our citizens deserve a proven leader who recognizes the importance of customer service.”

Winfrey told the Detroit News that she has a plan that will “significantly reduce the amount of time and frequency” that a citizen visits secretary of state offices. She also said that she will, “actively encourage, empathize and educate the public on the value and the necessity of organ donation.”

Winfrey will compete with election law expert and Wayne State University professor Jocelyn Benson for the Democratic nomination.

Benson announced her candidacy last summer and has raised more than $200,000 dollars.

Republicans running for secretary of state include State Sen. Cameron Brown of Sturgis, State Sen. Michelle McManus of Lake Leelanau, Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander and Rep. Paul Scott of Grand Blanc.
