Today is the deadline for candidates at the state level to file their campaign finance reports with the Secretary of State’s office, but some of the numbers for major candidates had been announced earlier. Attorney General Mike Cox announced three weeks ago that it had raised $1.8 million up to that point and had $1.5 million on hand, numbers that have likely gone up since then.
Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder announced about ten days ago that he had raised $3.2 million, but it’s likely that much or most of that money has come from Snyder himself. And over the weekend, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said he had raised about $900,000. And finally today, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra said he had raised about $759,000, with $447,000 in cash on hand.
The Detroit News reports some of the totals for other state-level candidates. State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, the only declared candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor, reports having raised $36,245 with $10,451 still in the bank.
In the race for attorney general, Republican Bill Schuette has raised $402,740, which seems like a very large number at this stage. His main competitor for the nomination, state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, has not yet reported his numbers. It will be very interesting to see how he fares compared to Schuette.
The fundraising race for the secretary of state position is very tight. On the Republican side, Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander has raised $127,983 and has $69,871 on hand, while state Sen. Michelle McManus has raised $100,295 and has $43,449 in the bank. On the Democratic side, Wayne State University law professor Jocelyn Benson has raised $227,000 with $207,000 in cash on hand.
