When Gov. Jennifer Granholm steps to the microphone of the House of Representatives Wednesday, she will likely be speaking above the din of protesters filling the lawn of the capitol.
At least two groups are planning protests: groups worried about potential tax increases and students connected with NoBrokenPromise.com have both announced protests.
In an interview with the Kalamazoo Gazette, Ben Lazarus, a Central Michigan University stutdent, says he is expecting thousands of college and high school students to converge on the capitol to demand reinstatement of the Michigan Promise Scholarship. The plan was dumped last fall when the legislature, struggling with a massive deficit and a GOP unwilling to consider any revenue increases, passed a cuts-only budget. The cut was made part way into the year, leaving many Michigan college and university students scrambling to come up with additional cash for school.
Lazarus’ group is calling on legislator’s to skip Granholm’s speech and instead gather outside with them to hear the stories of students and others impacted by budget cuts.
“The message we’re pushing now is for students to call their legislators and tell them to boycott the State of the State address and listen to the real state of the state on the steps of the capitol building,” Lazarus said. “The stories of students and taxpayers, hardships because of their broken promises.”
Capitol managers say they expect the crowd of protesters to be more than 1,000 this year — the largest in Granholm’s eight year tenure as the state’s top executive.
