The Bernero Oops

The exploratory committee of Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero is saying an accidental announcement that he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor was “youthful mistake.”

On Thursday, the committee sent out a notice to James Madison College students at Michigan State University announcing internships for the mayor’s campaign for governor, reports the Lansing State Journal. The problem? Bernero has not formally announced he will actually run.

“[Jamaine] Dickens said Bernero has not decided yet whether to run for governor.”

Michigan Messenger has confirmed that the former state senator and representative will seek the nomination, but Bernero’s Vote Virg Team continues to play coy.

Bernero, a Democrat, just started his second four-year term as mayor of Lansing. He formed an exploratory committee for a run for the governor’s office late last year after announcing he was being courted to do so by operatives in the Democratic National Committee and the White House.

State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith is the only Democrat formally in the race for governor, but Rep. Andy Dillon of Redford Township has formed an exploratory committee and is widely viewed as a likely candidate. The Democratic race was thrown into chaos earlier this month when front runner Lt. Gov. John Cherry said that he would not seek the nomination of the party. His announcement set off a frenzy of speculation.
