With the potential field of candidates for the Democratic nomination for governor still up in the air, you can add another name to the “no thanks” list: Pistons great Joe Dumars.
According to MLive.com, Dumars issued a statement Wednesday saying taking care of the Detroit basketball team:
“I am flattered by and very much appreciate those who strongly believed I would make a formidable candidate and an effective governor for the state. But I am not a politician and do not have plans to run for public office. While I certainly will consider new and different business opportunities that come before me on the business front, my attention now is squarely focused on the Detroit Pistons,” Dumars said in a statement.
Dumars name surfaced as a possible Dem option following the announcement earlier this month that Lt. Gov. John Cherry, the presumptive frontrunner, was not going seek the nomination. Additional names that have been floated include, but have since said no thanks include Congressman Bart Stupak, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, and more.
On top of Cherry’s withdrawal from the race, former state Rep. John Freeman dropped out recently, and state Sen. Hansen Clarke filed to run, then withdrew a couple of days later.
The only formal candidate for the Dem nomination is state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith. But Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon and Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero have formed exploratory committees. And while Bernero is playing coy with the media, Messenger has confirmed he will seek the nomination.
Other names that have been floated as possible Dem candidates include Denise Ilitch, a University of Michigan regent; Bob Bowman, former state treasurer under Gov. James Blanchard; and Dan Kildee, former Genesee county treasurer.
Over in the GOP field, the battle lines are well established with six people vying for the nomination: Mike Cox, attorney general; Pete Hoekstra, congressman from Holland; Mike Bouchard, Oakland county sheriff; Tim Rujan, Huron county commissioner; Rick Snyder, an Ann Arbor businessman; and Tom George, state senator from Kalamazoo.
Former GOP Congressman Joe Schwarz is rumored to be considering a run at the Gov’s office as an independent.
