State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, an East Lansing Democrat who dropped her bid for the Democratic nomination for attorney general in 2010 Wednesday, laughs when asked if there is any other reason for her exiting the race than her family.
“There absolutely was not anything else behind this,” she said.
She said the rumors bouncing around Lansing — that she dropped out because Lt. Gov. John Cherry exited his bid for governor; that she dropped out because Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero offered her the Lt. Gov slot for his bid for the Dem nomination for governor; that she dropped out because of the unexpected win of Scott Brown, a Republican, for the U.S. Senate seat vacated when Sen. Ted Kennedy passed away in August — are “funny.”
“No, no, I made this decision this past weekend after a few weeks of agonizing and debating within myself. I thought I had a very strong chance of winning, or I would not have thrown my hat in the ring,” she said. “The only thing I did not take into account is the toll my absence during the week would take on my kids.”
So what’s next on the Whitmer storyline? She says she will run for re-election to her Ingham county senate seat, because she “loves” being a senator. That, she said, will allow her to do the two things she values most — “being a hands on mom” and “being a zealous advocate for my constituents.”
Whitmer said she has not decided who, or if, she will endorse in the Democratic primary race for attorney general.
