I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Updated: Conflicting reports on alleged bomb threat on airplane

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 01.15.10 | 12:14 pm

7 & 4 news in Traverse City is reporting that a man claimed to have a bomb onboard a morning flight from Chicago.

Security crews are on scene at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, after a man claims to have a bomb on the United Express flight from Chicago.

Officials tell 7 & 4 News the passenger was locked in the bathroom saying he had an explosive device. The suspect was arrested when the plane landed and all other passengers are safe. A bomb sniffing dog is being brought in to check the plane.

Officials are interviewing the flight crew and passengers at this time. When the interviews are complete the suspect will be taken to the Traverse City Police Department.

The NBC affiliate posted this report in a 10:51 update to its website.

Update: The Michigan Messenger’s Eartha Melzer is at the Traverse City airport and spoke to a passenger on the flight, which only had 11 people on it. David Boyer, an attorney who lives in Chicago and Traverse City, who was on the flight between those two cities and witnessed the entire incident, said this is a clear case of racial profiling and that there was never any threat to the plane whatsoever:

“There was no disturbance,” Boyer said. “The passenger just happened to be flying while Muslim and happened to use the washroom. The reports that there was a bomb threat are completely false. A Middle Eastern looking passenger used the bathroom as anyone would.”

More updates as they come in.

I would very much like to have 5 minutes with whomever panicked on this flight and called terrorist-wolf. What a fucking country we live in, full of intolerance, hatred, and fear.

If there was a single scrap of evidence or even “evidence” then this guy would be under the jail. That there was no arrest and no charges filed should tell you what? And Fox is hardly a credible source for news on, oh, just about anything. What a pusillanimous country, scared of its own shadow.
