Conyers demands investigation into Detroit imam’s death

By Ed Brayton | 01.14.10 | 7:17 am

Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Detroit area Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who was gunned down in a raid by the FBI and local police in October. The Detroit Free Press reports:

Conyers, a Democrat who serves as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to Holder today that also called for the Civil Rights Division to investigate whether the FBI has violated First Amendment freedoms by using undercover agents in mosques and other houses of worship.

Conyers cited reports that government informants visited and recorded statements at the mosque of Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who died in the shootout in Dearborn Oct. 28.

“The shooting of Imam Abdullah has been controversial from the moment the first bullets flew, and passions continue to rise in Detroit and around the world,” Conyers said. “A complete and fully transparent investigation is needed.”

Part of the controversy is based on reports that Abdullah arrived at the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s facility in handcuffs after being shot multiple times and dying at the scene. That has raised questions that could be answered by the coroner’s report on Abdullah’s death, but the Dearborn Police Department has instructed the county not to release the report due to their ongoing investigation.
