I just read a breaking news report which said Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota got the thumbs down from the McCain campaign for the veep slot.
MSNBC mentions in its freshly updated report that Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania and Connecticut’s Sen. Joe Lieberman could still be in the running. Speculation about Alaska’s Gov. Sarah Palin as a veep candidate increased as well.
Mitt “Mittens” Romney did not appear to be headed for Dayton, Ohio, where John McCain is supposed to appear with his veep pick at noon today. Sure looks like Detroit-born “Mittens” isn’t going to get the nod at this point.
Of the known potential field, Google Trends gave Romney the best chance at veep candidacy, but internet chatter is probably not enough to persuade the McCain folks, even with Karl Rove’s blessing. The McCain team is going to want somebody strong enough to push down the post-convention bounce the Democratic ticket of Obama-Biden have mustered.
After the McCain campaign’s negative anti-celebrity ads swatting at Obama’s popularity, it seems ironic that they’ll really need a celebrity to muster some serious counter-offensive buzz.
