Asian carp even closer to Lake Michigan than we thought

By Ed Brayton | 01.13.10 | 7:30 am

It seems like the bad news on this issue is coming in faster and faster every week. Now the Detroit Free Press reports that new tests have found DNA for Asian carp right next to Lake Michigan in the Chicago Sanitary and Shipping Canal.

The latest results—two samples that showed carp DNA—were at the Wilmette Pumping Station north of downtown Chicago. The pumping station is next to Lake Michigan, and pumps water from it into the Chicago River. Before that, carp DNA was found near a lock about six miles from the lake. The latest results come from sampling in October.

The Supreme Court is expected to take up the issue at their weekly conference on Friday in response to a request from Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox for an injunction closing the locks that separate Lake Michigan from the Chicago canal and the Mississippi River.
