The race to replace Congressman Pete Hoekstra of Holland in the U.S. Congress is in full gear. Hoekstra is not seeking re-election this year, and is instead running for governor.

Vying to replace him, according MLive.com, are four Republicans and a Democrat.

The Republicans are Holland state Sen. Wayne Kuipers, former state Rep. Bill Huizenga of Zeeland, Former NFL player Jay Riemersma and Fruitport businessman Bill Cooper.

The only Democrat in the race is Fred Johnson, a history professor at Hope College in Holland.

The district flows from rural northern Michigan’s Benzie County, along the western shore of the state to encompass part of Grand Rapids, and all of Ottawa County. It is considered a solid Republican district, and the winner of the GOP primary is basically assured Hoekstra’s seat.
