Hoekstra campaign: White House behind Cherry not pursuing governorship

By Todd A. Heywood | 01.07.10 | 11:13 am

The gubernatorial campaign of Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Holland says the White House political machine is behind the Tuesday announcement by Lt. Gov. John Cherry that he would not seek the Democratic nomination for governor.

WZZM-TV, the Grand Rapids ABC affiliate, quotes Hoekstra spokesman John Truscott:

“The White House is very involved in this – we’ll see who their chosen nominee is. It’s been underway for 4 to 5 months. I’m sure Cherry will have a nice position with the federal government.”

As Michigan Messenger reported late last year, Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero had been courted by the White House and other national Democratic officials for a gubernatorial run this year.

Truscott recently made similar statements about Cherry’s lagging national party support recently in the Holland Sentinel: “It’s unfortunate for John Cherry. He’s a good man and has a long record of dedicated service. However, the White House is very involved in this and they’re looking to anoint someone else.”

Wonder how the Democrat Party appreciates being told what to do by D.C.?

Just another off the cuff nonsensical statement from Hoekstra, who should have been doing his oversight on the CIA and Blackwater, and making real changes in inter IC cooperation for which he had ample time to affect.

The idea that the WH could influence what is currently happening in the gov race is just stupid.

Well according to Gingrich Cherry dropped out because he thinks Hoekstra got a boost from the Christmas day attack.

Hoekstra should resign for using a terrorist attack to solicit money.
