Redford Township Democrat and House Speaker Andy Dillon has made a video announcing he has formed an exploratory committee for a run for governor, the Michigan Information and Research Services news is reporting.
Citing sources close to the Speaker, MIRS says Dillon shot a video Tuesday after Lt. Gov. John Cherry announced he would not continue his campaign to seek the Democratic nomination for governor. The move is not unexpected.
Dillon would add his name to an increasingly crowded list of candidates vying for the nomination in August. Already on the ballot are Salem Township State Rep. Alma Wheeler-Smith, former State Rep. John Freeman and Detroit State Sen. Hansen Clarke. Michigan Messenger has confirmed Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero will also run for the nomination. Former Michigan State University football coach and MSU Trustee George Perles has said he is considering a bid for the nomination as well. Many others are rumored to be considering a bid too.
Dillon is considered controversial for the primary with Democratic primary voters because he is anti-choice. In addition, he worked with Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop last year to balance the budget with cuts only, gutting or severely rolling back state services. Dillon has also caught flack from the state’s unions for his proposal to combine public employees’ health care plans under one umbrella. He says the move would save governments millions, but experts disagree.
