To avoid Cherry fate, Wheeler Smith puts out fundraising appeal

With Lt. Gov. John Cherry, the presumptive nominee for governor in the Democrats primary for governor, out of the race, State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith is not letting the grass grow under her feet. The Salem Township Democrat who is a declared candidate for her party’s nomination, sent out a fundraising appeal last night.

Today, more than ever before, I need your help. I need you to volunteer, to enlist the support of your friends, family and colleagues and to donate to my campaign. The political reality is that candidates are not only judged by their vision and qualifications, but the amount of money in the bank.

On Tuesday, Cherry dropped his bid for the governor’s office citing poor fundraising performance as the reason. Cherry’s exit set off what one political observer called a “free for all,” leading Detroit State Sen. Hansen Clarke to toss his hat in the ring, so that he joined Wheeler Smith and former State Rep. John Freeman. Tuesday, Michigan Messenger also confirmed Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero will seek the nomination, although he continues to play coy with the media about his intentions. House Speaker and Redford Township Democrat Andy Dillon is also thought to be prepared to step into the race as a result of Cherry’s abrupt stage right exit.
