Detroit City Council gets started

By Ed Brayton | 01.06.10 | 7:00 am

The new Detroit City Council, with five newly elected members, had its first official meeting on Tuesday, making assignments to several key city boards on which councilors sit and considering a measure that would cut their own pay — and that of Mayor Bing and the city clerk. The Detroit News reports:

The council considered a measure to cut pay by 10 percent for all nine members, the city clerk and Mayor Dave Bing. The city charter only gives the council the power to reject the pay cut. The body has until Jan. 15 to act. The members generally said they supported the cuts, but Councilmember Brenda Jones said a similar 10 percent cut should be applied to all contractors.

Council members and the city clerk normally make $81,312 a year, and the council president makes $85,456. Bing has been donating his salary to the police department.

Brenda Jones was voted for a spot on the Police and Fire Retirement Systems board, while Saunteel Jenkins was elected to the General Retirement System board. Both of those committees have been mired in scandal for corruption and are under federal investigation.
