Fear of Katrina

As noted in a MarketWatch report today, the memory of Katrina hangs over the GOP and its prospective nominee:

“The Republican Party may hold off on its national convention next week if Tropical Storm Gustav turns into a hurricane and strikes the Gulf Coast, a spokesman for presumptive presidential nominee John McCain said Thursday.

“Sen. McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis…”

Um, I read somewhere recently that Senator McCain was finally taking some time to get familiar with computers and the internets. Or, perhaps it’s just no big deal to him to tell the American public lies while he’s on the campaign trail as there’s no one following him around with a laptop that knows how to use the Google.

On August 28, 2005, as Katrina gathered strength in the Gulf Coast, Senator McCain was on ‘Face the Nation.’ He made no mention of Katrina whatsoever. As Katrina made landfall in Louisiana the following day, the Senator was on the tarmac at Luke Air Force Base in his home state of Arizona being photographed as he was presented with a birthday cake by George W. Bush on McCain’s 69th birthday. The former rivals posed, holding the cake up for cameras, and within seconds, went their separate ways. The cake, melting in the 110-degree Arizona heat, was left behind, uneaten.

Three days later, the levees had already breached and New Orleans was drowning, John McCain’s office released a public statement- three sentences – urging the nation to support the victims of Katrina.

John McCain didn’t arrive to tour the devastation in New Orleans until March of 2006. He voted against establishing a Congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local responses to Katrina in med-September 2005. He repeated that vote in 2006. He voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane, and in 2006 voted against appropriating $109 billion in supplemental emergency funding, including $28 billion for hurricane relief.

It makes sense that the Republicans would consider rescheduling their conference for another date. What compassionate conservative wants to get caught partying on camera while one of our nation’s cities drowns… a second time?
