New local politics radio show coming to Detroit airwaves

Ex-council candidate John Bennett

Ex-council candidate John Bennett

Ex-Detroit City Council Candidate John Bennett is soon to join venerable local talking heads like Mildred Gaddis and nationally syndicated ones like Al Sharpton on the radio lineup at WCHB AM 1200, one of the metro area’s leading talk radio stations.

And if Bennett’s outspoken, opinionated past provides any guide, he’s sure to do well. Back in 2002, Bennett, a former Detroit police officer, was fired for not taking down his now defunct website www.firejerryo.com aimed at, well, firing former Detroit Police Chief Jerry Oliver. Bennett eventually got his job back after taking his First Amendment case to court. Now his taking those same free speech rights to the airwaves to talk local politics.

The new show takes its name from his blog DetroitUncovered Live, and launches on Jan. 9, airing from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays. In a story in the Detroit Free Press today, Bennett gives a colorful preview:

“We’re going to ask some very thought-provoking questions and give it to you straight, no chaser,” Bennett said about the tone of the show.

Bennett finished 13th in the November city council election, winning more than 35,000 votes. On his blog, he includes the “167 council candidates” who ran in the first round of the city elections (presumably himself included) on his best of 2009 list (“These Detroiters cared enough to step into the political muddle,” he writes), along with Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Councilor Kwame Kenyatta.

On his worst of 2009 list: Former City Councilor Monica Conyers, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.

And on both: the people of the Detroit, Mayor Dave Bing and Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Robert Bobb.
