The state’s upper peninsula is targeted for a six person homeland security team by the Michigan State Police.

The Mining Journal reports the MSP are funding the program with part of a $6.6 million federal stimulus grant for rural law enforcement. The money will be split between three areas, including the U.P., Grayling area and the thumb region. Each area will get $2.2 million to spend over the next two years.

And what terror threats will MSP officers being fighting in the winter badlands of the U.P.?

[Capt. Myles] McCormack said the U.P. team will be used for special traffic enforcement projects, added police presence at special events and for other assignments.

Team members will receive enhanced training and equipment for searching vehicles, serving search warrants and other tasks.

Some examples of how the team capable of quick response will operate include assisting with summer traffic law enforcement along the busy and often dangerous U.S.-2, combating crime at places with limited police presence like K.I. Sawyer and providing assistance to police at events with big crowds like the St. Ignace car show.

Terrorists of the tundra be warned. The U.P. is looking out for you.
