Granholm: ‘I was vetted for the Supreme Court’

LANSING — During her annual year-end press conference, Gov. Jennifer Granholm said she was vetted for a post on the U.S. Supreme Court.

“I know that I was vetted for the Supreme Court,” Granholm said when asked about persistent rumors earlier this year that she was being eyed for spots in President Obama‘s administration.

In May, U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr., a Detroit Democrat who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, told a gathering of progressives in Detroit that he had withdrawn his support for Granholm to be appointed to the Supreme Court. In early May, word leaked out that Granholm had made it to Obama’s short list, but Conyers said he told the Obama not to appoint her.

Michigan Messenger reported on Conyers’ statement in May:

Asked if his withdrawal of support for Granholm killed the governor’s chances for an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, Conyers, who had initially suggested Granholm as a Supreme Court pick, response was: “Yes.”

Granholm was being considered to replace Justice David Souter. Obama instead appointed Sonia Sotomayer, who was confirmed over the summer.
