Michigan prison to house Penn. inmates

It’s not the Standish prison, but a prison in Muskegon County is going to stay open because of an agreement to transfer 1,000 inmates there from Pennsylvania’s overcrowded prisons. The Detroit News reports:

Pennsylvania’s decision will save about 200 jobs at Muskegon Correctional Facility, which the state Department of Corrections had planned to close at the end of January. The Pennsylvania inmates will begin arriving Feb. 1.

“Wonderful is not the word — I’m ecstatic,” said Darren Ansorge, a guard at Muskegon Correctional Facility and president of the Muskegon chapter of the Michigan Corrections Organization. “The bottom line is 150 people will remain unharmed because of Pennsylvania coming.”

Unfortunately, this is the third blow to the hopes of the town of Standish, whose prison is still slated to close due to budget cuts. They had previously hoped to get inmates from Guantanamo Bay and from California, but both plans fell through. They were also in the running for the Pennsylvania transfers.
