Bernero forms exploratory committee for run for Gov.

By Todd A. Heywood | 12.21.09 | 10:03 am

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has formed an exploratory committee for a run for governor, reports a Lansing television station.

WLNS, the CBS affiliate in Lansing, reports Bernero will fill the paperwork for a possible run later this week.

Bernero, who won re-election to the Lansing Mayor’s post, would run as a Democrat, facing off in August with Lt. Gov. John Cherry, State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, former State Rep. John Freeman. Former MSU football coach and current MSU Trustee George Perles is mulling a run for governor as well.

Cherry is seen as an early favorite for the nomination, but Bernero says officials from the Democratic National Committee and the White House have pushed him to run because they’re concerned about Cherry’s chances in the election. Cherry has consistently polled behind the possible Republican challengers.

Bernero told Michigan Messenger earlier this month that if he seeks the nomination for governor he will run a “revolutionary” campaign. His biggest sticking point on deciding about a run, he said, was the cost for the election, which experts have put between $2 million and $5 million. While he has earned the moniker “the angriest Mayor in America” from his numerous national television appearances in defense of the auto industry, he is also a shrewd politician.

Late last month, Bernero said he was ‘very unlikely’ to run for governor, and 24 hours later he reversed course and announced he was seriously considering a run. This came after months of Bernero telling local media he would not seek the governor’s office in 2010. That announcement brought a barrage of criticism for him, because during his mayoral re-election campaign this summer he consistently told reporters he was not interested in running for governor. His announcement led his mayoral opponent Carol Wood, a Lansing city council member, to say “this is another example of his untruthfulness.”

Editor’s Note: This post has been corrected to reflect that Bernero said he was “very unlikely” to run, rather than he “would not run,” 24 hours before announcing he was seriously considering running.
