With a stroke of her gubernatorial pen Friday afternoon, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed into law a statewide smoking ban that covers most public places and is set to take effect May 1.
The new ban means that Michigan joins more than three-dozen other states with similar smoking bans. The one major exemption to the bill Granholm signed today will be on the gambling floors of Detroit’s big three commercial casinos. Their advocates successfully convinced lawmakers that without an exemption, the state’s Indian casinos — part of sovereign nations not subject to Michigan law — would have a big competitive advantage over MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown and MotorCity casinos.
Granholm signed the measure into law at a smoke-free Lansing bar. According to the Detroit Free Press, Granholm hailed a healthy victory:
“This is a great day for Michigan because it means we join 37 other states. We have made a statement about the importance of the future of health in Michigan.”
Granholm said secondhand smoke has killed thousands of people in Michigan and nationwide.
