The Unknown Candidate

If this were the old Gong Show, Lt. Gov. John Cherry would be on stage with a paper bag over his head telling bad one-liners. But this is politics and Cherry is, for all practical purposes, the unknown candidate. As the Detroit Free Press reports, a new poll shows that nearly 40 percent of Michigan voters have no idea who he is — even if you give them his name.

EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said more than a third of voters (39%) don’t recognize Cherry’s name. Three top Republican rivals all have better recognition: Attorney General Mike Cox is known to all but 16% of voters, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard to all but 29% and U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra to all but 35%.

The poll was released as Cherry acknowledged a shake-up in his campaign staff that he said would help him to focus more on issues.

Notice that says 39 percent of voters don’t recognize his name. Even if you give voters the name “John Cherry” they still don’t recognize who he is. If you asked “who is the Lt. Governor” or “who is the leading Democratic candidate for governor next year” you would almost certainly get an even worse result.

This is not good news for the Democrats’ hope for holding on to the governor’s mansion, nor is the fact that polls have continually shown him losing by double digits to all three of the top Republican candidates over the last few months.

The only good news for Cherry? His Democratic rivals have even less name recognition than he does.
