Penn. inmates for the Standish prison?

By Ed Brayton | 12.16.09 | 7:40 am

Now that we know that the Guantanamo Bay detainees will be moved to a prison in rural Illinois, Gov. Jennifer Granholm is hinting at the possibility of keeping the Standish prison open by housing inmates from Pennsylvania instead. The Detroit News reports:

She said Michigan never made a proposal to bring the Gitmo terrorist suspects to Arenac County and added that the prison there is still being considered by Pennsylvania officials to house some of their overflow prisoners.

“Ultimately, I believe the Illinois facility worked out better for them,” Granholm said at a Lansing news conference. “We’re pursuing using that Standish facility in a way that will have more broad community support.” …

Granholm said she has spoken twice with Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell about locating some of that state’s inmates at Standish, but added she doesn’t know when the Keystone State will make a decision on that issue.

That would certainly be good news for the state and for the Standish community.
