Some GOP candidates say they won’t participate in straw polls

By Todd A. Heywood | 12.14.09 | 11:26 am

At least three Republican candidates for statewide offices have announced they won’t participate in straw polls anymore.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Secretary of State candidate Anne Norlander, Attorney General candidate, and current state Senator, Mike Bishop and Gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Mike Cox are declining to participate in the polls.

Straw polls are taken at party events, and often times attendees are allowed to purchase additional tickets. The money raised from such endeavors go to fund the activities of the group holding the straw poll.

This news comes after Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder won such a straw poll in Kent county, then won the straw poll at the 9th Congressional District’s “Pancakes and Politics Breakfast” in December. Jake Suski, the spokesperson for Snyder, put out a press release announcing the results:

Rick Snyder: 271 votes
Mike Bouchard: 137 votes
Pete Hoekstra: 101 votes
Mike Cox: 42 votes
Tom George: 4 votes

Here’s the thing about that event, as the Freep reports. The breakfast had only 300 attendees, and each attendee could buy up to five additional votes. That means as few as 46 people at the breakfast could have given Snyder the win.

buy votes? You sure this is a straw? Senator Brown has proposed to stop the buying of endorsements from groups. Now we have this? I am sure it is not new, but our future is, by shedding propoganda. Let truth prevail and the U.S. Constitution by electing candidates who will inform DC to cease and desist.
