The Kilpatrick court follies continue

By Ed Brayton | 12.08.09 | 7:11 am

Following the Kwame Kilpatrick court battles is a lot like watching some viral video on Youtube of someone doing something you can’t believe — it’s just so ridiculous, you can’t stop watching it. In the latest hearings, Kilpatrick, the disgraced former mayor of Detroit, is trying to get his $6,000 a month restitution payments reduced but he’s running into some serious credibility problems. Like this one, reported by the Detroit News:

Kilpatrick acknowledged spending $15,770 on plastic surgery for Carlita Kilpatrick on April 9, just weeks after his attorney filed a March 24 motion saying he could not afford to pay all of his $6,000 a month restitution. Kilpatrick wouldn’t divulge the nature of the procedure, but called it “something very personal.”

And this one:

He and his family paid about $75,000 for a 13-month lease in Texas in June, about the time Kilpatrick claimed in court documents he only had $6 left in expenses to pay toward $1 million he was ordered to repay the city following his conviction in the text-message scandal.

He was also caught misleading the court, telling them that the lease on their home in Dallas was taken care of by his wife and that he had no knowledge of it — until recordings of phone conversations were played in court of Kilpatrick talking to his wife about the lease and calculating out all the costs himself.

Nope, I can’t stop watching. The sheer chutzpah of the performance compels me.
