The fallout from massive cuts in local revenue sharing in the new state budget continues, as the city of Lansing has been forced to make deep cuts in the police and fire departments to make up for a $3 million shortfall. The Lansing State Journal reports that the firefighters union has agreed to nearly half a million dollars in concessions:
Union leaders for Lansing firefighters announced today that they have a ratified, concessionary agreement with the city of Lansing that will save $483,614 within the next six months and help close the city’s $3 million deficit.
The concessions include staffing and benefit cuts. The police department is likely facing similar concessions and/or layoffs as Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero wants $1 million cut from the two departments in order to balance the budget.
