Poison tally so far: One Asian carp

After poisoning the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal two nights ago to kill off any Asian carp that might have breached the electrical barrier being shut down for maintenance, state and federal authorities have so far found a grand total of one specimen of the invasive species in the canal.

Wasted effort? Perhaps. But given the danger this species poses to the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem on which so many industries rely, it’s almost certainly better to err on the side of caution. All it takes is a few members of an invasive species — just enough to stow away in a ballast tank — to eventually take over huge bodies of water.
