The right responds to Hillary’s speech

By Ed Brayton | 08.27.08 | 8:52 am

Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com offers an excellent way of knowing whether Hillary’s speech was effective

How you’ll know that Hillary’s speech was a winner:

If the principal Republican talking point tomorrow is: “the speech was too good! It just proves that she should have been the [Presidential/Vice Presidential] nominee!”

Said one Republican on Larry King Live immediately after the speech:

“The quality of her speech should be leaving Dems scratching their heads as they wonder why she isn’t on the ticket.”

Well that didn’t take long. I’ve made no secret of my disdain for Hillary Clinton over the last few months, but I thought her speech last night was exactly what Obama needed. She didn’t just endorse him, she challenged her own followers who were reluctant to support him and she did so in stark terms. The Obama campaign had much to be concerned about before that speech was delivered but they must be beaming from ear to ear now.

Say what you will about both Clintons but one thing is clear: They have a sense of the moment and a strong understanding of their place in history. In retrospect, everyone should have known that despite whatever private feelings she may be masking, there was no way Hillary Clinton was going to pass up the opportunity to play the hero last night. Anything less could have caused real trouble not just for Obama but for her own legacy within the party. And she seized that moment in a big way.
