Liz Cheney’s group argues against relocating Gitmo detainees to Michigan

By David Alire Garcia | 11.23.09 | 5:28 pm

In case you missed this late last week, ex-Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter Liz has waded into the debate over whether or not Guantanamo Bay detainees should be relocated to a prison facility in Standish, Michigan.

But, the mini-documentary released on Friday by Keep America Safe — slickly produced and complete with interviews of local Standish citizens — appears to take some liberties with the facts.

For example, viewers are told in the video that “the politicians aren’t listening to Standish citizens” and “the politicians promise the prisoners will bring back lost prison jobs, but local leaders know that it’s just a ruse.”

But according to Plum Line blogger Greg Sargent:

Standish’s City Manager tells us that local leaders and residents want the facility, and dismissed Cheney’s efforts as “fearmongering.”  Cheney is “certainly not representing the views of our community,” the City Manager, Michael Moran, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson.

Last month, Michigan Messenger chronicled the local city council’s unanimous vote in support of transferring federal inmates, including alleged terrorist detainees from Guantanamo Bay, to the town’s maximum correctional facility. The detention facility closed on Oct. 31 due to budget cuts, leaving about 250 locals jobless.
