Federal and local authorities in Colorado continue to unravel an alleged plot to assassinate Sen. Barack Obama at Invesco Field in downtown Denver on Thursday night. And the posters on the white nationalist Web site Stormfront message board continue to distance their movement and deny involvement in any such plot, referring to those arrested as “morons” and even “operatives of the Zionist Occupied Government.”
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph in London, one of the accused plotters reportedly said, “He don’t belong in political office. Blacks don’t belong in political office. He ought to be shot.”
The man interviewed is 33-year-old Nathan Johnson, one of three men officials arrested in the case. The first is Tharin Gartrell, 28, and the second is Shawn Robert Adolph, 33.
The plot began unraveling in the early hours of Sunday, Aug. 24, when Gartrell was pulled over by Aurora, Colo., police for erratic driving.
During that traffic stop, officers found two rifles, including one with a scope on it, as well as a bullet-proof vest, ammunition and the drug meth. As the officer began investigating, Gartrell led police to the other two associates, who were arrested. Adolph attempted to flee from his sixth-floor hotel room by jumping out the window, police said. He sustained a broken ankle in the fall.
And while the alleged plotters have made incriminating statements, including stating they were going to shoot Obama with a rifle powerful enough to shoot accurately from 750 yards, the U.S. attorney in Denver has said there is no credible threat against Obama, the first black man to be nominated as his party’s presidential candidate.
“We’re absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention (in Denver), or the people of Colorado,” U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said in a statement.
White Nationalists on Stormfront continue to assail the plot and the news reports about it, claiming that White Nationalists would never be involved in meth or other drugs.
