My name is Franklin White, I'm only 32 years old and my whole life has been turned completely upside down because of one incident that could have easily been avoided due to the negligence of Cobo Hall. April 24th 2004 I was working for Detroit newspaper delivering papers at Cobo Hall Convention center. As I was leaving the building a huge metal ventilation unit fell from the ceiling of the building onto the back of my head and neck. Immediately, I went to the hospital and they determined I had a serious C1, C2 fracture which could have resulted in being paralyzed from the neck down or death. On October 1st I had a C1 C2 fusion surgery in which I lost 75 percent movement in my neck making me unable to move my head left or right, I also suffer from hi tension head aches, stress and insomnia. After being a star employee with Detroit newspaper, they decided to terminate my employment a year after my surgery, voiding my medical benefits and preventing me from continuing proper treatment, I was also unable to then receive unemployment. The doctors told me I had little chance of full recovery and would most likely end up being unable to walk again. When I filed a complaint against the City of Detroit and Cobo Hall the court system tried to justify their negligence by saying that there was no previous knowledge of there being anything wrong with the roof or ceiling. They claim they're not responsible for anything that happened and they feel they shouldn't have to compensate me for this event that changed my health for the rest of my life. Although I had seven witnesses that actually saw the ventilation system fall on my head including Cobo hall employees, I still have yet to get this matter resolved. A recent article surrounding Cobo hall included complaints from participants in the auto shows saying large chunks of the ceiling were falling and crushing show cars. If a car made of metal can be crushed from their faulty ceiling imagine the pain I have been enduring for the past four years of my life, on top of just trying to get compensation for what will forever haunt me. I'm currently on my third denial I don't have any other options and I feel like I'm fighting a battle that won't be won. I lost my home, my car, my job and my marriage due to this event. I can't find work because of my health status, they won't accept my disability requests because of my age, I'm at the end of my rope begging for someone to just take a second and look into what Detroit's Cobo hall is doing to me. I feel like I'm being swept under the rug and no one can hear my plea for help. Will you help?

No. 286572

LC No. 06-622558-NO

fwwhite0509@yahoo.com
