A 30-year-old man East Grand Rapids Police officials say was arrested for assaulting officers has died in police custody. In order to subdue the man, police say they had to taser him.
The Grand Rapids Press reports the tasering incident has not been officially tied to the man’s death.
Police tell the Grand Rapids Press that they were called to the scene for a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival officers made contact with Matthew Bolick. Police alleged Bolick assaulted one of the officers, and was subsequently tasered. They say the taser had no effect and Bolick ran into the house, with officers in pursuit. A second struggle ensued, resulting in Bolick being tasered again.
Once officers subdued and arrested Bolick, he died, according to a press release from the East Grand Rapids Police Department.
The news comes on the heels of the Lansing Police Department’s reprimand of an officer for using a taser — which shoots metal darts into a target and delivers an electrical jolt causing the target to collapse — on a suspect who was handcuffed. Lansing Police say the officer violated department rules.
In addition to the Lansing Police incident, Michigan State Police in Traverse City tased a 17-year-old girl in Oct.
