It appears that months of speculation and debate on whether the soon to be closed prison at Standish should be used to house detainees from Guantanamo Bay will all be for nought. The Detroit News reports that the Obama administration is now focused on a prison in rural Illinois as the leading candidate to house those inmates after the Gitmo facility is closed.
The White House said Saturday night that an Illinois state prison was a leading candidate to house detainees from Guantanamo Bay — the strongest sign that a Michigan prison is no longer a likely choice.
An administration official told The Detroit News Saturday that the “federal government is considering the possible acquisition of the Thomson Correctional Facility from the State of Illinois.” The facility is in Thomson, Ill. — about 150 miles west of Chicago — and is near the Mississippi river bordering Iowa.
In all likelihood, that means the end of any serious consideration for the Standish facility.
