DETROIT — Some Board of Education members want a state investigation into how much the city owes the district in delinquent property taxes because the reported amount of debt has been inconsistent. The board’s finance committee voted for the investigation and the rest of the board will make the final decision on Thursday.
The district’s emergency financial manager Robert Bobb sent a letter to Mayor Dave Bing on Nov. 3 requesting that the city pay $8.4 million owed to the schools in the past three years, the Detroit News reports.
As a Free Press report indicates, the city of Ecorse went into receivership after the school board requested a state investigation into city owed property tax. The article speculates that if the state finds that the city owes the district more than it can repay, Detroit could go bankrupt.
