Two polls, one by the Detroit News and one by the Detroit Free Press, show conflicting results in the race for Michigan’s electoral votes for president. The Detroit Free Press poll showed Obama with a 7-point lead, while the Detroit News poll showed Obama with a much smaller 2-point lead. Both polls were of 600 likely voters.
Because the Detroit Free Press poll was published on Aug. 21 and the Detroit News poll was published on Aug. 25, that might give the impression that the News results are newer and reflect a post-Biden effect, but in fact the polls were taken before the Biden pick was announced (the Free Press poll was taken 8/17-8/20 and the News poll was taken 8/18-8/21).
There are a couple other interesting things revealed in the polls.
First, the Free Press poll showed Obama with a 17-point lead among independent voters, a group that McCain traditionally polls well with. Second, the two candidates are tied among better-educated and more affluent voters. That goes strongly against the national trends, where Obama has a sizable lead among those groups. Lastly, 31 percent of those polled said their minds could change between now and the election.
