Ordinance 1856 passes in Kalamazoo

Ordinance 1856, the Kalamazoo city referendum that prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, looks like it’s going to pass. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that with 15 of 19 precincts reporting in, there are 6333 yes votes and 4007 no votes.

Update: 17 percent of precincts reporting, the ordinance still leads 6,731 to 4,356. One Kalamazoo, the group advocating passage of the ordinance, has declared victory. Jon Hoadley, who led the organization’s efforts, released a statement saying, “Our campaign started with a very basic idea, and today voters confirmed that we are One Kalamazoo.”
